We know that he lived in the twelfth century and was a jester or flatulist at the court of King Henry II, who ruled England, Wales, and substantial parts of northern and western France from 1154 down to his death in 1189. Roland the Farter's given name was George. [citation needed] He was given Hemingstone manor in Suffolk and 30 acres (12 hectares) of land in return for his services as a jester for King Henry II. Each year he was obliged to perform " Unum saltum et siffletum et unum bumbulum " (one jump and whistle and one fart) for the king's court at Christmas.
